How many times have you heard that expression? Sadly however, there's a lot of truth to the statement.
You rarely, if ever, see the old fix-it shop of generations gone by, because most products manufactured today have a "life" cycle, designed to make them available for the trash heap when their top-performing days have been exhausted. Modern manufacturing techniques make it possible to create everything in great quantities, and cheap labor in third world economies keep prices down so you can toss whatever you feel is no longer useful, never having to fix anything again. Gone are the preponderance of TV repair facilities and small appliance repair shops, and gone from popularity are the neighborhood shoe repair shops. All of these things are fond memories of a bygone era where even if any still exist, are today few and far between.
But furniture is a lot different.
Since as far back as antique shops can recall, furniture has been built to last. Today we have the furniture chains that sell the appearance of expensive, but as any real furniture lover will tell you, these are basically junk pieces with a very short life. Gone are the investments you put into fine furniture with strong frames made from hardwood that would undergo a kiln-drying process to assure that its shape and stability would be retaiined over the long haul. The concentration then was on creating a good quality frame, one that resists shrinking and cracking and one that would remain absent of knots that so often cause cracks. You'd get joints that were glued, the addition of reinforcing dowels, and further insurance from heavy duty screws and wood blocks.
So if you have a piece that has served you well over these many generations, reupholstering it makes far more emotional and economic sense than trying to replace it. Even if you could locate a manufactrurer of new furniture that creates a product like "the good old days", chances are the labor costs to produce it will have put it well out of the reach of most average consumers.
East Meadow Upholsterers can return your favorite pieces of fine furniture to their glory days and give them a brand new life for the next generation to enjoy and appreciate. They will start again stronger and more attractive than ever before, ready to continue their useful life and blend in beautifully with any new decorating schemes you have created.
Since 1951, our enviable reputation for craftsmanship, innovativeness, and dedication to the attention of detail remain second to none.
